Micosoft pulls through

I was one of the unlucky once that was left pulling my hair out and forking over money to fix an xbox 360 that was only 5 months old, but had long since seen its wonderful 90 day warranty come and go to quickly. I was very happy, and dare I even say proud of Microsoft, for living up to their obligations and refunding my repair costs of my 360. If you have an Xbox 360 made before Jan 1st 2006 and had to pay for repairs Microsoft is refunding you your money. Microsoft announced that the defect rate of the 360 made before said date is to high, so they will cover the repair costs. Good job Microsoft!!!!

360 crash

Well it happened to me!! Saturday afternoon I went to play my Xbox 360 and when it powered up in gave me 3 red lights. As soon as I saw them my heart sunk and depression set in. If you are not aware, 3 red lights on the Xbox 360 means you have experienced a hardware failure. After going through some trouble shooting steps it was determined I would have to send the box off to get fixed. Microsoft only offers a lame 90 day warranty on the thing so $120 dollars later my xbox is off to get fixed up. Microsoft does have a nice 7 to 9 day turn around though and the $120 includes everything (shipping there and back and all repair costs).

All I can say now though is I better have this xbox for many years without issue.

If you are buying an xbox now make sure to register it. If I would have registered it my warranty would have been one year (something no one tells you).

Xbox 360 news from CES

So here is some interesting news from CES. Microsoft announced they will be releasing an external HD-DVD drive for the 360. It is still unclear if Blu-ray or HD-DVD will dominate the movie space so I am not in a hurry to get one.

Microsoft is also adding an additional Xbox 360 manufacturing plant to try and meet demand (about time this shortage is ridiculous, but I have my 360 already so I don't care as much now ).

On I side note...... How big do our TV's have to get people!?!?!?!?!
Panasonic at CES showed off there 103 inch plasma screen TV. Do we really need 103 inches?

No HD-DVD for Xbox 360???

Ok, now this really puts a damper on the Xbox 360 for me.

With the push around HD games that Microsoft has been making around the Xbox 360 it seems pretty stupid that the console would never have an HD-DVD Drive and therefor limiting disc space to a standard DVD which HD Games are pushing the max on.

XBox 360 DVD Drive or HD-DVD?

I have been following the news on the Blu-Ray -vs- HD-DVD battle.

It looks like all major movie manufactures are going to support Blu-Ray and some are going to support both (read more...). This makes me worry how useful the xBox 360 will be as a DVD medium since it will have a HD-DVD drive; especially, if the format starts to go the Blu-Ray direction (which looks to be the case). The other issue I have is this:

"Microsoft will equip the initial models with classic DVD drives, and only after the new HD-DVD are ready, the Xbox will incorporate them. " read more ...

So the first batch of xBox 360 will have a standard DVD drive and later batches of the 360 will be upgraded to the HD-DVD drive. With HD games coming out already pushing the size limit of the standard DVD discs I do not want a 360 that does not have an HD-DVD drive, but how long HD-DVD will be the format drive of choice is also in questions.

The other question is if the launch titles of Xbox 360 games are relased on standard DVD will the adoption of the HD-DVD games be held back since now you have two Xbox360 platforms out there? I assume that HD-DVD can play standard DVD? So those that bought the standard DVD Xbox 360 console may be screwed when the HD-DVD version and games start coming out.

DCut

I have found my new favorite plug-in for my Media Center 2005.

DCut is still in beta release right now and still is a little raw in how it works and the UI but it performs great and gives me just the plug-in I have been looking for. It allows me to edit and compress my dvr-ms files. I am very pleased with this application.

A hotfix already????

Many of you already know that Microsoft released the Rollup 2 pack for MCE 2005 today. What I can understand is how they have a hotfix out for it already!!??!?!

They release the rollup today and moments later release a hotfix. Nice.

No details on what it is suppose to fix so I will not be installing it.

Xbox 360 Extender and Rollup 2

I have been trying to dig up as much info as I can on the MCE Rollup 2 due out Oct 13th, and the Xbox 360 extender functionality. I am trying to get a list of freature enhancements the two have. I has been hard to dig up and I must say that in true MS fashion they do not provide much depth in their product overviews. I have managed to track down some blogs and forums though with people that have gotten their hands on it and been able to work and talk to the product team. Buckle up here we go:

    Xbox 360 Price announced

Well it looks like me previous post was unjustified. Microsoft announced today the pricing structure for the Xbox 360. Low end model (No wireless controls, no hard drive, no media center extender) $299. High end model (Wireless controller, 20GB hard drive, media center extender) $399. I am still trying to find more info about possible improvements the XBox 360 will have in its extender software. Since I already have an extender I am really hoping that the Xbox 360 extender software will have increased functionality. Wireless controller and hard drive (which will come pre-loaded with games, although probably pretty lame games), which will allow you to play old Xbox games like Halo 2. Start saving those pennies kids.

BTW games are going up $10 in price too. Read more ...

    XBox Price Game

So I am very excited about the release of the Xbox 360. I have been planning on buying one this Christmas. The rumor mill has the price at right around $299 - $399 depending on the flavor you get. That is a cost I can absorb. However, talk now has it that Microsoft may up the price of the console because Sony is floating the rumor that the PS3 will be"very expensive."  I know they both loose money on the sale of their game consoles but $399 is at the very top of what I am willing to dish out. I really hope these two don't decide to go high on the price and try and break even on the sale. If they do their games better get a lot cheaper since they are currently making a ton of money off the sales of games!
