The Favre ride has closed

I was sad to hear this morning that Brett Favre has decided to hang it up. I think most people would agree that while Favre had a lot of ups and downs he was one of the most, if not the most, enjoyable NFL player to watch play. He was a player you could see and feel the love of the game from when you watched him play.

I think a lot of fans loved the Packers because they loved watching Favre play the game.

I am a Bronco fan but I have to admit, part of my excitement about the coming season has left knowing there will be no Favre to watch play.

Not a lot of athletes help me enjoy the ride any more so I just had to say thanks to one who did.

Oh the Broncos

Well once again it looks like we will still have a so-so offense with a defense that plays good in the first half but cannot stop a sole in the second half. That combined with a so-so offense will probably make for a so-so year.

I think people are starting to realize that Jay Cutler is not the savior everyone here said he would be (knowing Denver they will give him a grace year this year but starting running him out of town if next year is the same), but hopefully over the next couple years he will develop into a more stable QB. At least 1 interception in every game he has played. At least Jake Plummer had a better winning percentage.

Shot a 39

I recently went golfing and shot my best round ever. I shot a 39. This is on 9 holes of course, which is normally what I play. Par for the course was 31. Still no PGA type numbers but I was very happy with the number I turned in.

Bronco’s QB

I love living in Denver and watching the Bronco's play. It makes it even funnier to watch them because I went to high school with Jake Plummer who is their QB (until now that is). That fact is not influencing my opinion about the recent QB change that is going to take place with the Broncos. Fans here in Denver are irrational when it comes to their QB. The fans want to blame Jake for all their problems. While I will be the first to admit Jake is not having a very good year he is not the reason we have dropped out last 2 divisional games. As much as the Bronco defense started out the year great they have not played well as of late. How much can you blame the charger lose on Jake when in the middle of the 3rd period we are up 24-7 you would expect our odds to be good at a win. That is until your defense is not able to stop the other team on a single drive the rest of the game. Sorry but that lose is on the D not on the QB.

I do think Jay Culter, in the pre-season, looked to have a better arm then Jake and looks to be more accurate, but (and this is a big but) that was the pre-season where teams run pretty standard defenses of cover 2 and simple zone schemas. Life is different in the real world. On top of this Jake on average has not gotten very much time in the pocket to throw which will hurt any QB's rating. Who knows maybe I am wrong about this, maybe starting a rookie QB halfway through the season when your team is deep in the middle of the playoff hunt will be a good thing. I realize Jake's QB rating (70.5) is towards the bottom in the NFL, but do you realize who he still rates higher then? Matt Leinart (68.1) and Vince Young (56.1), two rookies who both won the Heisman trophy and took their college teams to the national championship game. Do we really think our rookie that lead his team to a .500 season will do much better? Maybe, maybe he is that one in a hundred kid that will come out of nowhere. I guess we will see.

I think these stats prove it is more than the QB that is not getting it done. Maybe a rookie QB will bring that passing stat up but I am not hopeful of it and with a D that cannot stop the pass it does not make the offenses job any easier.

Therapy

Golf is Therapy. It really is as simple as that. At first it is therapy because it teaches you to control and deal with your anger. Then once you learn how to play a little the frustration starts to go away. No I am not saying I never get frustrated anymore when I play (I am not that good yet). Once you can play decent it is therapeutic because you get to spend a few hours on a beautiful golf course in great weather. It gets to be very relaxing, especially early in the morning. As my borther puts it "Any day on the golf course (regardless of how you play) is better than any day in the office." :)

Broncos get saddled

I am very sad to say that the Broncos are out of the super bowl race. This was my first time living in a town that had a sports team with a shot at going to the super bowl, and I was really hoping to experience that. Unfortunately, the Broncos did not play well at all. Of course everyone here will be blaming it on Jake Plummer (2 int, 2 fumbles). While I defiantly cannot say Plummer didn't have a lot to do with it, I also cannot say he is the reason. The Bronco defense did not stop the Steelers on any drive in the first half and gave up points every time the Steelers had the ball.
Despite all that though we still had a shot at coming back. That is until Jake's interceptions. Both were bad decisions. The one at the end of the 1st half with like 1:38 to go was especially costly. I cannot blame Jake for his fumbles though. The O line did not give him much protection. Any QB is likely to fumble when he is getting hit by two linebackers seconds after hiking the ball. The second one was agian because he was trying to get away from pressure and find time to throw the ball. People are so soon to criticize Jake and try and run him out of town they will forget that he was running for his life most of the second half because the O line could not block for him. A lot of the plays that were made in the second half, to keep us in the game, were because Jake could scramble and make those plays (Plays that most QB's in the NFL could not make).
I am not trying to excuse Plummer here. A large part of the loss is on him, but not entirely on him. I have seen Jake play through High School, College and the Pros. At each level he has proven he can play under pressure and from behind. I have watched him master many come from behind drives. He has over come many of his bad habits he got into in Arizona this past year and I am excited to see how he improves this next year.

Hats off to the Steelers, they have been playing great football.
